What is Full-Day Kindergarten?

Ontario is implementing full-day kindergarten for four- and five-year-olds with a seamless and integrated day that includes:

  • An engaging, play based educational program during the regular school day
  • Integrated programs before and after school hours designed to complement the regular school day. These are optional and are offered to parents for a reasonable fee. Subsidies will be available for families that qualify. Before and After School Programs will be offered based on parent demand.

Each child is unique and exceptional

Children arrive at school with different backgrounds, experiences and are at different stages of development. Teachers and parents working together can provide learning experiences that will build each student's confidence and give everyone the best possible start.

"Every experience in a child's early life has an impact of his/her development now and in the future.  Parents and families are the first and most powerful influence on children's early learning and development.  Young children and their families live in communities that shape early experiences."

(ELECT, p.4)

We encourage you to contact your school Principal to talk about the Kindergarten program and how the program will support your child's educational adventure.

FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN FOR
FOUR- & FIVE-YEAR-OLDS

In September 2010, the government began phasing in full-day kindergarten for four- and five-year-olds. In the first year, nearly 600 schools offered full-day kindergarten for over 35,000 students five days a week.

In fall 2011, nearly 800 schools offered full-day kindergarten. Within five years, all schools in Ontario will offer full-day kindergarten. Click here for a complete list of the selected schools that offer full-day kindergarten. Full-day kindergarten will be available in all publicly funded elementary schools across Ontario by September 2014.
